Types of merchandising refrigeration

  • Glass swing-door merchandisers: True GDM-23 and GDM-49F, EFI X-Line glass door coolers and Atosa MCF8727GR for drinks and packaged food.
  • Sliding-door merchandisers: True GDM-41-HC-LD and GDM-47-HC-LD, Habco SE40eHC and EFI C2S models save aisle space because the doors do not swing out.
  • Glass-door freezers: True GDM-49F and EFI X-Line freezers (F1-27GDVCX to F3-78GDVCX) for ice cream, frozen meals and ice.
  • Pass-thru and slim-line units: True Fast Lane GDM-CPT pass-thru models and the GDM-41SL slim line suit grab-and-go counters and tight spaces.
  • Sushi display cases: Hoshizaki HNC countertop cases in 48–84" widths, offered in left- or right-side configurations.
  • Gelato and wine displays: Nemox gelato display and storage cases, and Gemm BRERA wine displays in 162- and 252-bottle sizes.

What to consider when choosing a merchandiser

  • Refrigerator or freezer: Decide by product: drinks and grab-and-go items need a refrigerator; ice cream and frozen meals need a freezer.
  • Swing or sliding doors: Swing doors open fully for restocking; sliding doors suit narrow aisles and busy front counters.
  • Capacity: True GDM models are listed by cubic feet (e.g. 23, 41, 47, 49 cu ft); compare by how many facings and cases you need.
  • Lighting and finish: Many models list black or white exteriors; choose a finish that suits your front-of-house.
  • Placement: Glass-door units in sunny windows or near ovens work harder; leave clearance for ventilation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a merchandiser and a reach-in refrigerator?

A merchandiser is designed to show product to customers, usually with glass doors and interior lighting. A reach-in is built for back-of-house storage and frequent staff access.

Are sliding doors better than swing doors?

Sliding doors are useful where aisle space is tight, since they do not open into the walkway. Swing doors give full access to the shelf when restocking.

Can I use a glass-door merchandiser for ice cream?

Use a glass-door freezer rather than a refrigerator. For scooping, see Ice Cream & Novelty Freezers.
