Ice scoops, totes and ice tools for safe ice handling

Ice is food, and handling it safely starts with the right tools. This collection includes ice scoops with hand guards, scoop holders and caddies, ice transport totes, ice buckets, and silicone moulds for large cubes and spheres. Brands include San Jamar, Browne, Spill-Stop, Rubbermaid, Service Ideas, Vollrath and Winco.

It is part of Bar Supplies and works hand in hand with your ice machine and ice bin. Keep a scoop in a holder at every bin, and use dedicated totes to move ice between the machine and the bar.

What's in this collection

  • Ice scoops – Plastic and stainless steel scoops from 3.3 oz bar scoops up to 64–86 oz bin scoops, including San Jamar Saf-T-Scoop models with dual germ-guards.
  • Scoop holders and combos – San Jamar Saf-T-Scoop and Guardian systems, the Saf-T-Ice scoop caddy and Spill-Stop wire holders keep the scoop out of the ice.
  • Ice totes – San Jamar Saf-T-Ice totes in 5 and 6 gal with a matching tote lid for moving ice from the machine to the bar.
  • Ice buckets – Service Ideas double-wall ice buckets with lids and tongs, and the Vollrath Traex Ice Porter with a hanging bracket.
  • Ice moulds and chillers – Winco, TableCraft, Tovolo, Ghost Ice and American Metalcraft moulds for 2" cubes and spheres, plus chilling stones and an ice chipper.

What to consider when choosing ice tools

  • Scoop size versus bin – Use small bar scoops at the well and large 64–86 oz scoops for filling totes from the ice machine bin.
  • Hand guard – A guard between handle and scoop keeps knuckles out of the ice, which is a common inspection point.
  • Storage between uses – Never leave the scoop buried in ice; a wall-mounted holder or guardian system keeps it clean and drains away melt.
  • Transport – Purpose-built totes are safer than reusing buckets or pails that may have held chemicals.
  • Specialty ice – Large cubes and spheres melt slowly for spirits served neat or on the rocks; size moulds to your glassware.

Frequently asked questions

Why should an ice scoop have a hand guard?

It prevents hands from touching the ice while scooping, reducing the chance of contamination.

Where should I store the ice scoop?

In a dedicated holder or caddy outside the ice, such as a San Jamar Guardian system mounted on the machine or wall.

What size scoop do I need for an ice machine bin?

Large scoops in the 64–86 oz range fill totes quickly; keep smaller 6–16 oz scoops for bar wells and drink stations.

How do I move ice from the machine to the bar?

Use a dedicated, lidded ice tote such as the San Jamar Saf-T-Ice tote, and keep it for ice only.
