Types of bowls
- Soup and stacking bowls – 10 to 18 oz bowls like Browne Palm and Tableware Solutions Pure White that nest tightly on the line.
- Bouillon bowls and cups – 7 oz handled or footed bowls for broths, chowders and side portions.
- Nappies and fruit bowls – 3.5 to 16 oz dishes for fruit, sides, sauces and grapefruit halves.
- Cereal and oatmeal bowls – deeper 10 oz bowls for breakfast service and small salads.
- Pasta and noodle bowls – wide, shallow pasta bowls and deep noodle bowls from Churchill, Steelite and Libbey Porcelana.
- Onion soup crocks – oven-safe crocks from Tuxton and Rabco for gratinéed soups under the salamander.
- Plastic and melamine bowls – Cambro Camwear, Cal-Mil and Aladdin Temp-Rite bowls for cafeterias, healthcare and outdoor service.
What to consider when choosing bowls
- Capacity vs. diameter – list the fluid ounces you actually portion, then check the bowl's capacity – a wide bowl can look generous with less volume.
- Heat use – crocks and porcelain go under a broiler or salamander; melamine and polycarbonate do not, and some clear plastics are rated for cold use only.
- Rim style – rimmed bowls give a place to rest a spoon and a clean frame; coupe bowls hold more for the same footprint.
- Stacking – stacking designs save space on the pass and in dish racks and reduce chipping when stored.
- Matching your plates – pick bowls from the same line as your plates (Libbey Porcelana, Browne Palm, Steelite Craft) for a coordinated table.

Frequently asked questions
What size bowl is best for soup service?
Cup portions usually sit in a 7 to 8 oz bouillon, while bowl portions use 10 to 16 oz. Leave headroom so servers can carry a full bowl without spilling.
Can onion soup crocks go under a broiler?
Ceramic onion soup crocks are made for that job. Plastic and melamine bowls are not and should be kept away from direct heat.
What is a nappie?
A nappie is a small, shallow bowl used for fruit, sides and sauces – essentially a fruit or side dish.
